Spirit Awards go green

Ceremony converts into eco-friendly event

Film Independent is cleaning up its act and converting the 2008 Spirit Awards into a zero-waste, eco-friendly event.

Changes will be made in virtually every facet of the ceremony, ranging from food preparation and type of food served, to differences in member viewing and voting tactics.

Among other efforts, ceremony will use recycled print materials, biodiesel-fueled generators, and offer attendees a ride-share program. In lieu of paper waste, distribution company B-side will offer voting members the option to view nominated films via online streaming, and may opt to vote online as well.

The newer, greener awards will take place Feb. 23 in Santa Monica.
