‘Song’ scribe receives Oz prize

Ayres' autobiographical tale wins $12,000 award

SYDNEY — Multihyphenate Tony Ayres collected a A$15,000 ($12,000) screenplay prize at the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards for his script “The Home Song Stories.”

Ayres’ heavily autobiographical tale of a Shanghai nightclub singer who struggles to survive in ’70s Australia with two young children stars Joan Chen alongside daughter Irene Chen.

Pic garnered good notices at its world preem at the Berlin Film Festival, debuted in Oz at the Adelaide Film Festival in February and will be released Down Under by Dendy Films on Aug. 16.
