‘Orphanage,’ ‘Roses’ lead Goya race

Querejeta’s 'Tables' has 10 nominations

MADRID — Spain’s foreign language Oscar candidate, Juan Antonio Bayona’s “The Orphanage,” has nabbed 14 nominations for the country’s 22nd Goya Awards, in a tie with Emilio Martinez Lazaro’s “13 Roses,” also up for awards in 14 categories.

Produced by Rodar y Rodar and Telecinco Cinema, and an imminent Picturehouse bow in the U.S., “Orphanage’s” noms include film, new director, supporting actress (Geraldine Chaplin), and original screenplay (Sergio Sanchez).

Best pic noms also include “13 Roses,” Jaime Rosales’ “Solitary Fragments” and Gracia Querejeta’s “Seven Billiards Tables.”

One of the tightest contests should come in actress, where “Orphanage’s” femme lede Belen Rueda faces off with Blanca Portillo, who won an actress plaudit at September’s San Sebastian fest for Querejeta’s “Tables,” which has 10 noms.

Another major face-off is in the new directors category, where Bayona is accompanied by Felix Viscarret, whose “Under the Stars” snagged seven noms, Tom Fernandez (“Suso’s Tower”), and David and Tristan Ulloa (“Pudor”).

“The Orphanage” is Bayona’s first feature. The last time a debutant director nabbed a best pic nom was in 2000, when Achero Manas’ “Pellet” went on to win the top Goya.

Earlier this month, “Orphanage” took seven statues, including pic, at the Barcelona Film Awards for Catalan films. It’s also the highest-grossing Spanish film of any nationality at the Spanish box office, with a $34.2 million haul.

An “Orphanage” win is no slam dunk, however. A period choral tragedy, “13 Roses” has a large ensemble cast, and the bulk of Spanish Academy members are thesps, giving the pic a slight advantage.

The 22nd Goya Awards will take place on the first weekend in February.
