Nantucket fest wraps with kudos

Arneson's 'Peck' wins Tony Cox award

NANTUCKET — The 12th edition of the Nantucket Film Festival wrapped Sunday, announcing winners in various prize categories.

Showtime’s Tony Cox award, recognizing an emerging screenwriter, went to Marc Arneson’s “Peck,” a comedy about a high-schooler with an unusual science project. Other Cox script kudos went to Nate Meyer (“Pretty in the Face”), who also won the festival’s writer-director award, and Dan Brown (for short “The Pipe”).

At Sunday’s closing night screening, Nantucket’s exec director Jill Burkhart and artistic director Mystelle Brabbee announced the audience awards. The feature kudo went to Joseph Greco’s drama “Canvas,” starring Joe Pantoliano and Marcia Gay Harden. Katie Van Fleet’s “Second Life” won for short film.

The docu prize for storytelling went to Luke Wolbach’s “Row Hard No Excuses,” about a two-man row-boat team in a trans-Atlantic race. And Mary Haas’ “Caroline by Committee” picked up a teen kudo.

On Friday evening, the festival introduced the first annual Adrienne Shelley Excellence in Filmmaking Award, a cash prize awarded to female filmmakers in honor of the late director (“Waitress”). Pantoliano presented the award to Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern for their Darfur docu “The Devil Came on Horseback.”

Among the jurors were producer Donna Gigliotti, producer-helmer Lee Daniels, author Anthony Swofford (“Jarhead”) and scribe Bill Monahan (“The Departed”).
