Dante Ferretti

Art director, 'Sweeney Todd'

For 15 years, art director Ferretti had been an almost perennial Oscar contender before finally winning for Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” in 2005. From his early years, working in his native Italy for Fellini and Pasolini, to his long association with Scorsese, which begin with 1993’s “The Age of Innocence,” Ferretti has been driven by an intense desire to inhabit the worlds he conjures, rather than simply making them textbook perfect. This year, he’s stretched himself again, designing “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” his first work with Tim Burton.
