Bill Nighy on Emily Blunt

Actors on Actors

“Emily Blunt is marvelous in ‘The Jane Austen Book Club.’ The comedy is discreetly and legitimately integrated into an authentic portrayal of a profoundly unhappy young woman who is isolated by her fearfulness. Miss Blunt is properly beautiful, and it is encouraging that she in no sense settles for this. Her expressive face and appealing deadpan describe her character progress from a hard-to-love, French-quoting book snob who holds herself in stiff retreat from her hippy-shit mother and sports-loving husband, through the softening effect of an unexpected crush to the open and lovely young woman she was supposed to be. It is all achieved in an uncomplicated fashion demonstrating considerable intelligence and a tender regard. There is a reckless absence of sentimentality. You are never in doubt that she treats her job and you as her audience with anything other than tremendous respect. As we used to say in the old days, she grooves me out.”
