Belinda leads MTV Latin nominations

Hilary Duff, The Cure to perform at Oct. event

MEXICO CITY — Mexican pop princess Belinda topped the list of MTV Latin America’s nominees for the sixth Los Premios MTV Latin America with five nominations.

Spain’s Alejandro Sanz and Argentina’s Babasonicos followed with four noms each for the kudofest, which airs Oct. 18 from Mexico City’s El Palacio de Los Deportes.

Mexican acts Division Minuscula, Julieta Venegas, Mana, Panda, and Paulina Rubio, along with Argentina’s Gustavo Cerati and Miranda!, as well as Chile’s Kudai, each nabbed three noms.

Event will be carried live on MTV Latin America’s three feeds as well as on U.S. Spanish channel MTV Tr3s and the English MTV2. Some as-yet unannounced Latin American broadcasters will also carry the event.

“This is a show where most of the categories are voted on by the audience,” said Jose Tillan, MTVNLA senior VP of creative, content and music. “That sometimes champions the underdog.”

Tillan, who is the event’s exec producer, noted Mexican indie act Panda was a posterchild for the event’s impact, going from near unknown status to sweeping three awards last year, including best band.

The event will include live acts from Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, Mexico’s Cafe Tacvba and the Cure.
