MEXICO CITY — Home teams scored big at “Los Premios MTV Latin America 2007,” with Mexico’s rock band Mana, rock-pop outfit Camila and pop princess Belinda each taking two awards.
Warner’s Mana won Best Group and Artist of the Year, while Sony BMG labeled Camila took New Artist North and Revelation Artist, and Televisa/EMI’s Belinda nabbed Solo Artist and Video of the Year for “Bella Traicion.” Avril Lavigne snagged two Tongues as well. Other key awards went to Mexico’s alt-diva Julieta Venegas pop artist, Panda for alt-rock and Argentina’s Babasonicas for rock.
Web boasts show reaches 270 million viewers worldwide on pay TV and broadcast outlets, mostly in Latin America. “The ratings are gigantic. It’s the highest rated show in pay TV in the region, and beats broadcast in some territories and age groups,” said Pierluigi Gazzolo, MTV Networks Latin America topper.
Kudofest was beamed for a second year in a row from the Mexican capital. Diego Luna hosted the show which featured performances by international acts like Daddy Yankee and The Cure mixed in with LatAm bands like Mexican punk group Division Minuscula and Chilean pop act Kudai.
Gazzolo “melting pot” event is gaining importance as international acts increasingly tap the LatAm tour market and cross-cultural influences proliferate, such as the current collaboration between Colombian cross-over sensation Shakira and Beyonce.
Winners were selected by 12 million online or text message votes, a 240% increase in voters compared to last year.
