HONG KONG – The most anticipated local movie of the early holiday season, “The Warlords” duly rampaged across Asia in its six territory day-and-date preem.
Pic, helmed by Peter Chan Ho-sun (second ref Chan), scored a thumping RMB13 million ($1.77 million) in mainland Chinese theaters on its Thursday opening day. That added to the RMB9 million ($1.22 million) of sneak previews on Wednesday and gave an end of Thursday total of RMB22 million ($2.99 million). Launch was helped by a rollout on a record scale with over 1,000 prints.
In Chan’s Hong Kong hometown pic’s opening day gross was a healthy HK$1.68 million ($215,000). That figure included HK$250,000 ($32,000) of Wednesday previews.
Singapore, where pic is repped by Innoform and handled in conjunction with Shaw Renters, “Warlords” swung at S$172,000 ($119,000). It was put out on a wide 38 prints.
Neighboring Malaysia notched RM180,000 ($54,300). Pic is handled by Grand Brilliance and released on 50 prints.
A spokesman for co-producer Media Asia described the performance as “wonderful.”
Movie was also simultaneously released in Thailand, but figures were not immediately available. It bows Friday in Indonesia and in Taiwan on 28 Dec.
