MediaCorp Raintree Pictures and the Media Development Authority of Singapore have unveiled plans to back “881,” the country’s first musical movie in several decades.Pic will be directed by Royston Tan, locally regarded as one of Singapore’s most promising helmers. Action follows two childhood friends whose ambition is to put on a getai musical. “881” will feature songs by the late getai artist Chen Jin Lang with dialogue in Mandarin and Hokkien. Budget of $650,000 will be co-invested by Raintree, the MDA, Eric Khoo’s Zhao Wei Film, Infinite Framework and Scorpio East Pictures. Raintree and Zhao Wei act as producers, Infinite will provide post-prod services and Scorpio East and Golden Village Pictures will codistrib in Singapore.
