BERLIN — Celebrated action helmer Johnny To is to make a quintet of movies called “Tactical Unit” as an extension of “PTU,” his hit cop drama where all the action took place in a single night.
Only one pic of the five will be presented for theatrical release. The other four will transit straight to DVD and TV markets, where To’s brand of triad action pics has a loyal following.
To, who as producer has “Eye in the Sky” in the Forum, will start lensing “Tactical Unit” shortly after returning from Berlin, and is skedded to deliver the first element in the package by May.
He is now in post-production on “Sparrow,” a suspenser about pickpockets, and his third of “The Iron Triangle.”
“Tactical Unit,” which is being made on a combined budget of $5 million, is bankrolled and repped in international markets by Hong Kong’s Universe Intl. Holdings.
Stars Simon Yam (“Election”), Lam Suet and Maggie Siu reprise their roles from “PTU.”
Universe, making its Berlin debut as a seller, is also handling “Invisible Target,” an $8 million martial arts actioner by Benny Chan starring Nicholas Tse, Jaycee Chan and Shawn Yue; To’s “Sparrow”; and three new pics by the equally prolific helmers the Pang brothers (“The Eye”): suspenser “The Photo” by Oxide Pang, horror-romancer “Dying Lover” by Danny Pang and Danny’s “Forest of Death,” which will be released next month.
