‘Gung’ wins Busan competition

Lee So-yeon's screenplay takes top prize

HONG KONG – “The Uninvited” helmer Lee So-yeon’s screenplay “Hwan Gung” was named the winner Thursday of the new look Busan Screen Writing Competition.

Script is a story about a woman who believes herself to be a mermaid and a man who believes himself to be a warier sent to return the mermaid to sea. First prize is worth Won 20 million ($21,800). Second prize, worth $10,900 was collected by Kim Jung-sim for “Noliteo.”

Organiser, the Busan Film Commission, has significantly changed the rules concerning awards.

Until last year, copyrights of winning projects were transferred to the BFC and the prize money was given as loans to be returned when their projects were realized. From 2007, winners do not have to waive their copyright nor return the grants. The number of applications this year climbed to 113.
