Universal Studios Home Entertainment topper Craig Kornblau is adding digital distribution to his duties at the studio, while U Pictures exec veep Michael Joe is assuming operational for local-language film production and worldwide acquisitions.
While Kornblau already was involved in dealmaking to put Universal content on the proliferating number of digital platforms, new title puts all such efforts under him for the first time. Joe, who is U Pictures’ chief strategy officer, is adding to his previous duties overseeing digital strategies and business development.
Kornblau will take on the additional title of president, Universal Pictures digital platforms, and will oversee online sales and rentals, as well as video-on-demand, internal vidgame projects and mobile platforms.
U’s decision to put digital distribution under the same exec as homevideo is similar to that made at some other studios; still other majors have appointed separate execs to handle new-media platforms.
Joe now will focus on business development, windowing and overseas production and acquisition. He is also the studio’s point person on equity financing deals and antipiracy issues.
Kornblau reports to U Pictures vice chairman Rick Finkelstein and co-chairman David Linde, while Joe reports to Linde and chairman Marc Shmuger.
