Web cafes probed

World Brief

China is stepping up its efforts to keep a tight rein on online activity and make sure the Internet is a platform for Communist Party doctrine, saying it will license no new Internet cafes this year while regulators carry out an industrywide probe.

According to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, the new measures are aimed at protecting young people from harmful online material such as porn and violent games.

Investigators will examine whether Internet cafes are improperly renting out their licenses or failing to register their customers’ identities.
