Online ‘Pirates’ game delayed

Multi-player spin-off won't be released until fall

Disney’s online “Pirates of the Caribbean” videogame won’t be setting sail for a few more months.

After missing a target launch for at least part of its massively multiplayer online game in May, planned to coincide with the opening of the third film in the series, the Mouse House confirmed Friday that it is delaying “Pirates of the Caribbean Online” until the fall.

Though it hasn’t confirmed a new date, Disney will most likely try to bring out the game around the time that “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” comes out on DVD.

Walt Disney Internet Group (DIG), which is publishing the game, decided to push back the release based on feedback from beta testers. DIG is ending beta testing July 16 and won’t restart it until September.

Makers of movie-based console vidgames usually try to avoid missing the film’s theatrical release date, since they do most of their sales in a month or two and rely in large part on the stu-dio’s marketing.

But multiplayer online PC games generate revenue from monthly subscriptions and must stay popular for years to become big hits.
