MGM video unit taps Weiss

Exec appointed VP of new division

Jason Weiss has been appointed veepee of MGM’s new division dedicated to the development and production of direct-to-video product.

Weiss will oversee an annual slate of 12 or more films and report to Charlie Cohen, MGM senior exec VP of finance and corporate development.

Creation of a direct-to-vid unit is the latest development at MGM since its reincarnation as a pure distribution studio under chairman-CEO Harry Sloan and chief operating officer Rick Sands.

Weiss has worked in feature film development and production for more than 12 years, mostly recently as an exec at MTV Films, where he oversaw a slate of 25 pics including “The Dirt,” “Black Hole” and “The Wheelman.”

Before joining MTV Films, Weiss oversaw production and development at Paramount Pictures and New Regency Prods. Pics he supervised include “Along Came a Spider,” “Runaway Jury,” “Just My Luck” and “Daredevil.”

Weiss is a producer on upcoming New Regency pic “The Onion Sketch Comedy Movie.”

He started his career working for Scott Rudin.
