NBC: Thompson Unlikely to Return to “Law & Order”

“Law & Order” got a last-minute repreive on NBC’s fall schedule, but don’t expect Fred Thompson to to return.

Thompson is considering jumping into the race for President, and has said that he will announce his intentions later this summer.

NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said today that “it’s pretty clear that Fred is going to be leaving the cast of the show, no matter what.” Reilly claimed no knowledge of Thompson’s plans.

I’ve heard that Thompson is still weighing his options — among them the fact that he’d have to spend the better part of the summer raising money. And there’s also the money factor — compared to other politicians, he’s hardly wildly rich — as he’d be tturning down a lucrative job offer to serve as radio host Paul Harvey’s replacement.

By the way, none of the politically themed pilots look likely to get pickups for the fall. So our political intake will be left to non-fiction doses.
