“This is like a party at my house — metaphorically, I mean,” said “Ugly Betty” showrunner Silvio Horta at the WGA’s “Gay Gate” picket Thursday, located at the main gate of Raleigh Studios Hollywood.
The event drew an enthusiastic turnout, with about 100 supporters as of midday — despite the 90-degree heat. Several “Ugly Betty” cast members joined the line on break from the season’s 12th episode on the lot.
“I know that it seems like this is pretty organized but it was really just a spur-of-the-moment thing to do this,” Horta said.
He added that the entire event struck him as bizarre, scary and great at the same time. “It’s great that we’re all here,” he said, “but ultimately, we want this to be over and to be on the other side of the fence. Because this is something that I’m taking very seriously.”
