NTV toons into Dejima’s comics

Web buys stake in comic book publisher

TOKYO — Nippon Television will take a 16% capital stake in comic publisher Dejima for $1.3 million, the web announced Monday.

Dejima publishes Comic Jumbo, Japan’s first free mass-market comic. NTV producer Toshio Nakatani, reponsible for hit toons “Nana” and “Death Note,” will serve on Dejima’s board as an outsde director.

The aim is to leverage synergies by producing toons based on Dejima’s comics and publishing comics by NTV toon creators.

Launched in January, Comic Jumbo is a weekly magazine that distribs 100,000 copies in Tokyo. It makes profits from sales of ads and paperback comic collections, as well as the production of toons based on its comics.
