China bows latest piracy campaign

Org teams with two other gov departments

BEIJING — China’s copyright administration org has said it will step up coordination with two other government departments to fight online piracy, including probes of Internet cafes and punishment for those illegally downloading pics and games.

News of the latest campaign to stamp out piracy comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing over intellectual property rights.

The National Copyright Administration said in a statement that it would work closely with the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of the Information Industry on a campaign running from August to October.

Many Chinese movie fans download pics from the web illegally in some of the country’s 113,000 Internet cafes and the government is trying to introduce standardized rules for these places.

The three ministries will work to close illegal websites and punish violators that infringe intellectual property rights by distributing pirated movies, music, software, computer games and books through the Internet, the NCA said.

The government bodies also want to supervise professional portals engaging in business related to film, music, software and books.

Enforcers said they confiscated 49 million illegal books, periodicals and audiovisual products in the first four months of this year during a crackdown.
