Last week’s “Saturday Night Live” was one for the book — a hilarious collection of talent — some accidental. Alec Baldwin, who hosted, (13th time) proved his versatility — he’s now also seen
dramatically comedically weekly on “30 Rock” “Studio 60” — plus three major big screeners.
His look-alike “interview” as a look-alike Tony Bennett — with Tony Bennett had the latter on the verge of breaking up — as were we. And Baldwin’s scene with Steve Martin — vying for the number of hosting honors — was reminiscent of the wild and crazy days of “SNL.”
The skit hit an unexpectedly higher note with the sudden appearances of: Martin Short — who dashed over from his “Fame Become Me ” stage, and Paul McCartney whom Steve Martin had spotted in the nearby restaurant and invited him “to watch” the show. He watched — on camera.
Lorne Michaels modestly accepted our congrats and allowed the humor generated by the show could only happen — when it’s “live-spontaneous.” And with the above-noted special talents. And oh yes, there was also a very special duet by the eye-and-ear-filling Christina Aguilera with Bennett. Hard to believe he’s 80.
