Spanish soccer docu kicks off on Fox

Sports net will bow series on April 16

U.S. Spanish-language sports net Fox Sports en Espanol will bow a five-part soccer docu-reality series “El Reto Final Nissan” on April 16.

Series will culminate in a match between players from the 1998 U.S. and Mexican soccer teams on May 21, broadcast live from the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., and air simultaneously on Fox Sports en Espanol and sister feevee Fox Soccer Channel.

The teams played each other twice in qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup and both games were draws.

The five-part series will revisit those matches — and the rivalry — through archival footage and interviews with players and fans.

“El Reto Final Nissan” is a joint production between Animus Group and Zeal Television.

World Cup 2006 gets under way in June and the Univision networks — broadcast nets Univision and Telefutura and feevee Galavision — hold the Spanish-language TV exclusive to the soccer tourney and will air all 64 matches live.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC have the English-language U.S. TV rights.
