Seven cancels 'Heelers' after 12-year run

SYDNEY — One of Oz’s longest-running dramas, rural cop drama “Blue Heelers,” has been canceled after a 12-year run on the Seven Network.

Show, set in the fictional town of Mount Thomas, was rumored for the ax last year but had a stay of execution, although Seven only ordered a truncated season of 10 episodes to bring “Heelers” to 510 episodes; that sees it pass Oz’s other popular cop skein, “Homicide,” to become the country’s longest-running weekly drama series. “Homicide” ran from 1964-76.

“Heelers” notched up auds of 2.5 million in its prime, though eyeballs have fallen away in recent times to around 1.2 millon. Show also won 24 Logies, Oz’s TV kudo.

“Blue Heelers” is a co-production between Seven Network and Southern Star.
