BARCELONA — La Sexta is to air a new Spanish language version of classic gameshow “Hollywood Squares,” to go out in primetime from Jan. 8.

“Tres en raya” will be produced for La Sexta by Martingala TV and fronted by former Telecinco reality show host Carolina Ferre. It will retain the jocose tone of the original.

Spain has already seen a local version of “Hollywood Squares,” “VIP Noche,” a hit for Spanish broadcaster Telecinco from 1990 to 92, when it was emceed by Emilio Aragon, now La Sexta prexy.

“Hollywood Squares” has already been re-versioned in multiple foreign territories included the U.K., Australia, Brazil, Singapore and China.

While quiz shows in Spain have a large student following, the celeb guest format of “Hollywood Squares” reps an attempt by the youth-skewing La Sexta to appeal to older demos.

La Sexta is controlled by Spanish production house Imagina and Mex-ico’s Televisa and was launched in March 2006. In a step-by-step build of share, it ended November with a 2.8% audience share.
