‘Idol,’ ‘Lost’ top Wednesday

Fox captured the second Wednesday of the May sweep in all key ratings categories behind “American Idol” and the season finale of “Unanimous,” but ABC’s “Lost” also fared well — despite no support from its skedmates.

According to preliminary Nielsen estimates, the “American Idol” results show stood as Wednesday’s top show (10.9 rating/26 share in adults 18-49, 27.2 million viewers overall), and “Unanimous” was a solid No. 2 at 9:30 with its conclusion (6.0/14 in 18-49, 14.1 million viewers overall). From 8 to 9, “Bones” (3.4/10 in 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall) finished second.

ABC’s “Lost” (projected 6.8/17 in 18-49, 16.4 million viewers overall from 9 to 10:05) was up week to week, taking control of the 9:30 half-hour. The dramas surrounding it, “Alias” at 8 (2.2/6 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) and “Invasion” at 10 (projected 2.9/7 in 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall from 10:05 to 11), were not competitive.

CBS was status quo with “Amazing Race 9” (3.0/9 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall), the season finale of “Criminal Minds” (3.6/8 in 18-49, 12.6 million viewers overall) and timeslot leader “CSI: NY” at 10 (4.9/13 in 18-49, 14.8 million viewers overall).

NBC had a better-than-average Wednesday, with “Deal or No Deal” winning at 8 (4.8/14 in 18-49, 15.4 million viewers overall) and “Dateline: To Catch a Predator” posting its best delivery to date at 9 (3.5/8 in 18-49, 10.3 million viewers overall). A guest appearance by Michael Imperioli of “The Sopranos” boosted “Law & Order” to a solid second-place finish at 10 (4.2/11 in 18-49, 12.6 million viewers overall), with the skein’s best numbers in three months.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 5.9/15; NBC, 4.2/11; ABC, 4.1/111; CBS, 3.8/10; UPN, 1.7/4; WB, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: Fox, 14.9 million; NBC, 12.8 million; CBS, 12.0 million; ABC, 10.2 million; UPN, 3.5 million; WB, 1.0 million.
