Fox takes on new ‘Career’

ABC makes 'Enemies,' 'Road'

Former pro basketball player Paul Shirley’s blog “My So-Called NBA Career” has spawned a half-hour comedy pilot at Fox.

Fox also has greenlit relationship drama “Primary,” while ABC has picked up hourlong skeins “Enemies” and “October Road.”

Written by Dan Fogelman (“Like Family”), “The 12th Man” is inspired by Shirley’s blog on ESPN.com. Single-camera project would revolve around a pro basketball player who’s not quite good enough to get much court time — and feels marginalized as a result.

Tim Story (“Fantastic Four”) is aboard to direct the pilot (Daily Variety, Dec. 5) and will exec produce with Fogelman. Shirley will produce; 20th Century Fox TV is the studio.

Story also is directing “Primary,” which comes from writer and exec producer Craig Silverstein (“The Dead Zone”).

“Primary,” which comes from 20th Century Fox TV as well, centers on a man and a woman who dance around their budding relationship while focusing on their jobs as hostage negotiators.

Over at ABC, “Enemies” moves forward after being held over from last year. From scribe Sean Bailey (“Project Greenlight”), drama follows two best friends who grow up to become mortal enemies –a cop and a criminal.

Bailey will exec produce with Ken Olin; Touchstone TV will produce.

Touchstone also is behind “October Road,” an hourlong about a screenwriter who moves back home and must readjust to life with his family and old friends.

Scott Rosenberg (“High Fidelity”), Andre Nemec (“Fastlane”) and Josh Appelbaum (“Alias”) will write and exec produce. Gary Fleder also is set as an exec producer.
