HOLLYWOOD — Relentless optimism and cracking wise underlined the Producers Guild of America’s Celebration of Diversity at the Beverly Wilshire on May 9.
Honoree Halle Berry provoked the biggest laughs of the event — sponsored by Variety — by quipping, “I want to thank you for not including a clip of ‘Catwoman.’ I love ‘Catwoman.'”
Randy Jackson, on hand to receive a kudo for “American Idol,” noted that the series’ portrayal of diversity is reflected by Simon Cowell finding something to dislike about every contestant — no matter what his or her background. “The commitment to diversity even includes William Hung,” he added.
Louie Perez of rock group Los Lobos told the audience the award would go in the place of highest honor — next to his sister’s diploma on the TV set at his mother’s house. Moments after receiving the kudo, group launched into “Cumbia Raza”
Emcee Jeffrey Tambor noted mid-event “I have an unscheduled thank you ….. to Tivo.”
