Actress Justine Johnston, who played Heidi Schiller in Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies,” died of a stroke in Los Angeles on Jan. 13. She was 84.
In addition to “Follies,” in which she sang “One More Kiss,” she appeared in eight Broadway shows beginning with “The Pajama Game” where she danced soft shoe with Eddie Foy, Jr., as well as “Irene” and “I Remember Mama.”
Most of her career was spent on the road with Broadway tours such as “Milk and Honey” with Molly Picon, “The Gazebo” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” in which she played Domina off and on for 33 years.
In her final stage appearance, she recreated her role as Heidi Schiller in Los Angeles’ Reprise! revival of “Follies” starring Patty Duke.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, she graduated from the Goodman Theatre School and then performed throughout the mid-Pacific with Overseas Unit 860.
Her film and television credits include “Arthur,” “9 ½ Weeks,” “Fatal Attraction”, “Running on Empty,” “All My Children,” “That’s So Raven” and “Seinfeld.”
Johnston served on the council of Actors Equity for 39 years.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
