The CW rocks to ‘Songs’

Scripted skein to focus on all-girl rock group

The CW hopes to get its groove on, partnering with Interscope Records and Jonathan Prince (“American Dreams”) to develop a drama about an all-girl rock group.

“Thirteen Songs” will center on the late teens/early 20s women as they navigate love, friendship and family while pursuing their music career. CBS Paramount Network TV is producing (and will be joined by Warner Bros. TV, per the CW’s agreement that all productions originating from one will be shared by both).

As part of the project, negotiations are in the works with a real-life girl group to write and record the songs to be performed on air by their like-minded fictional counterparts.

The show’s bandmates will be shown writing a song each week that relates to the episode’s plot; Interscope will then release the tracks for download on the Internet after the episode airs.

Interscope’s Polly Anthony and Jimmy Iovine are onboard as exec producers, along with Prince. Alex Sabeti is a co-exec producer. The CW has picked up a script for “Thirteen Songs.”

Prince’s last series, “American Dreams” — set against the backdrop of “American Bandstand” in the early 1960s — also focused heavily on music, regularly recruiting real-life performers to portray classic artists.
