Susan Browning, a two-time Tony Award nominee, died in New York on April 23 from respiratory failure. She was 65.

She is best known for her role as April in Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” which earned her a Tony nom for actress in a musical and the Theater World Award, given in recognition of a breakout performance. “Company” ran on Broadway for 706 performances from 1970-72, and Browning and most of the original cast rejoined in April 1993 for two revival performances.

Browning also received a Tony nom for featured actress in a musical for “Good Time Charley,” the lighthearted depiction of the story of Joan of Arc and Charles VII of France. She is also remembered for her role in Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two.”

Her roles on television include “NBC’s First Ladies Diaries,” for which she received a 1975 Emmy nom for her portrayal of Martha Washington.

Browning was a regular cast member on Norman Lear satire “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and on soap “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.”

Her film career included roles in “The World According to Garp,” “Sister Act,” “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” and “Sabrina.”

She is survived by a sister.
