Sony to sell Korean CJ’s shows in Asia

Dramas series to be distribbed across continent

Sony’s international TV distribution arm has inked with South Korea’s CJ Media to license upcoming drama series to broadcasters and digital content providers across Asia outside Japan, China and South Korea.

Deal strengthens the partnership between Sony Pictures TV Intl. and the CJ Group established last year when the Sony unit acquired the rights from CJ for South Korean pics “How to Keep My Love” and “The Greatest Expectation.”

In the region SPTI distributes Hollywood movies and series plus Asian hits such as “Kung Fu Hustle” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”; animation from Japan and South Korea such as “Tweeny Witches” and “MaskMan”; and Japanese miniseries “Tokyo Friends,” starring pop singer Ai Otsuka.

Agreement with CJ Media furthers Sony’s strategy of becoming a major distributor of locally made fare in the region.

“Korean dramas have enjoyed unprecedented popularity domestically and abroad in recent years, and we are thrilled to partner with one of the largest media and entertainment corporations in Korea,” said Ross Pollack, SPTI’s senior veep in Asia.

The first drama to be distributed under the deal is “Hyena,” a 16-episode series following the lives of four young men who eventually find love. Supervising the writing on “Hyena” was Wan-kyu Choi, scripter of “Prince of the Legend,” the top Korean drama this year.
