Make a difference in another's life

Not all New Year’s resolutions need to be self-flagellating. This season, resolve to make a difference in someone else’s life with one of the following worthy causes:

The Art of Elysium

Mission: Inspires children, who are battling serious medical conditions through workshops in acting, art, comedy, fashion, music and writing.
Lend a hand: Artists lead hospital programs; volunteers assist with special events, fund-raising, administrative help and marketing.
Who helps out: UTA’s Tracey Jacobs, CAA’s Dan Aloni, ROAR Management’s Will Ward, Kirsten Dunst and Joaquin Phoenix

MENTOR

Mission: Strives to improve public schools and empower neighborhoods in Los Angeles’ most disenfranchised communities.
Lend a hand: Host a “Power Lunch” with one of the program’s schools, or sponsor a “Career Day” for students. Tutors and mentors are also needed for after-school activities. Visit mentoring.com for local programs.
Who helps out: Alison Rein, Erik Feig, Rick Hess and Scott Strauss are on the board of directors. In March, the org will honor Tom Cruise at a gala chaired by Brad Grey, Peter Chernin and others.

Project Angel Food

Mission: Nourishes the body and spirit of adults and children affected by HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses by delivering free meals to the homebound.
Lend a hand: Cooks, delivery drivers and food packers needed.
Who helps out: Jimmy Iovine, Sharon Stone, Eric McCormack and Selma Blair

P.S. Arts

Mission: Works to restore arts education in schools where at least 40% of students live below the poverty line.
Lend a hand: Advocates needed. Show support by visiting their site and purchasing P.S. Arts merchandise, or make a donation in the name of a friend and P.S. Arts will send a gift insert that grows into wildflowers.

WriteGirl

Mission: Empowers girls by promoting creativity through writing.
Lend a hand: Any type of writer can participate in the mentoring or monthly creative writing workshops, or volunteer for event assistance, planning and coordinating, and book publishing.
