Helmer Dave Semel is onboard to direct the NBC pilot “Heroes,” the Peacock’s buzzworthy pilot about ordinary people who discover they have superpowers.

Semel is directing the pilot for NBC Universal TV Studio through his overall deal there. Tim Kring is behind the project, which stars Greg Grunberg, Ali Larter and Milo Ventimiglia.

Semel directed the “American Dreams” pilot at NBC, as well as the net’s upcoming drama “Windfall.” He also has helmed segs of “House,” “Ally McBeal,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Practice,” among others.

Meanwhile, Victor Nelli Jr. has been tapped to direct NBC’s “Community Service,” the pilot from NBC Universal TV and David Israel and Jim O’Doherty about a New York big-shot real estate agent who moves home to rural Ohio.

Nelli’s other credits include “The Bernie Mac Show” and “Kitchen Confidential.”

In other pilot news Thursday:

  • Michael Cassidy (“The OC”) will play Cliff and Amber Heard (“North Country”) is set as Greta in the CW’s Kevin Williamson drama tentatively titled “Palm Springs.” They join previously announced castmate Gail O’Grady.

Scott Winant is directing the drama (Daily Variety, March 1), which focuses on strange goings-on in the sunny desert city. Lionsgate and Outerbanks Entertainment produce.

  • Rachael Harris, who starred opposite Kirstie Alley in “Fat Actress,” will play Cooper on ABC’s “Notes From the Underbelly.”

Pilot, from Warner Bros. TV, also stars Jennifer Westfeldt. Harris’ recent credits include the features “Kicking & Screaming” and “Starsky & Hutch” and has guested on “The West Wing” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
