Jon Stewart once suggested that Hollywood is contractually obligated to put Steve Buscemi in one of every three movies it releases, but the character actor often has somewhere else he’d rather be while on set. “I prefer not being in the movie when I’m directing,” Buscemi said. “It actually helps me focus.”
Buscemi spoke at Tuesday’s Gotham preem after-party at Home nightclub for “Lonesome Jim,” a somber coming-home story reminiscent of David O. Russell’s “Spanking the Monkey” (minus the incest).
Pic is thesp’s second full-length directorial effort after the barroom slacker drama “Trees Lounge” — and first in which he doesn’t star. So why is such a hardworking actor so drawn to drifters? Main character “Jim is not really lost. He just” — Buscemi pauses — “doesn’t quite know how to get to where he’s going.”
