Variety deputy managing editor Jonathan Bing will step down in June to become an exec VP at Freud Communications Inc, the U.S. arm of the U.K.-based public relations firm started by Matthew Freud.

Freud’s U.S. operations were established in June, 2005, by former Miramax head of corporate communications Matthew Hiltzik.

Bing came to Variety as a staff reporter six years ago. He’s held a wide range of reporting and management roles, covering a number of media and film beats. He wrote the column “Hard Sell,” edited the Perspectives Page and been instrumental in overseeing Weekly Variety. He will continue in his current role at Variety until June 16.

“Jon has pursued his duties at Variety with great energy and intelligence, and we will miss him,” Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart said. “On the other hand, we hopefully will continue to see much of him in his new capacity and wish him well.”

Freud provides a broad spectrum of strategic communications, marketing and publicity services for companies in the media and entertainment sector. Its clients include Katie Couric, the Weinstein Company, HarperCollins and American Media. At Freud, Bing will work alongside president and CEO Hiltzik, exec VP Lisa Dallos and VP Courtney McCraw.

“Jon has learned from the best,” Hiltzik said. “His keen marketing insights, strong writing skills and experience will strengthen our entire team and allow us to provide unique marketing services to our clients.”
