1966: ‘Good Times’ roll

May 6, 1966:

Mother said there’d be days like this — there were a coupla moments on Sonny and Cher pic “Good Times,” when all visitors were suddenly barred from the set. They included: Cher’s mother, plus director Blake Edwards, who brought his children (fans of the film’s stars) …Director Billy Friedkin (on his first movie) shuttered the stage — after Sonny had blown 40 takes, none of which satisfied the always-affable thesp…Shortly after the episode, Sonny admitted he had a “block” on the scene — but regretted the discourtesy to the visitors. He tracked down Edwards on the Par lot, apologized, chatted with the kids and gave ’em autographed albums…His mother-in-law also seemed happy, back on the set, particularly since Cher had returned — in clown makeup…We assured Sonny not to lose any sleep over the large number of takes in a try for perfection — we’d seen it happen with Marlon Brando. And young Friedkin was also chagrined at the incident; he admitted Edwards is one of his favorites…(2006 update: Friedkin’s latest film, “Bug,” was shown in Cannes on May 17…It was directed by Friedkin as Katrina was bearing down on the “Bug” location near New Orleans.)
