Concord resurrects Stax

Hayes, Stone signed to soul label

Concord Records has revived soul label Stax and signed Isaac Hayes and Angie Stone as the imprint’s first artists.

Label will participate in several events in Memphis, where the original Stax was based, as well as a feature-length doc on the Stax story, to which Concord will own the rights.

The first Stax release will be “Interpretations,” a star-studded tribute to the songs of Earth Wind & Fire mastermind Maurice White, a Memphis native. Disc is slated to bow March 27.

Concord, which acquired the Stax name as part of the Fantasy Records catalog it purchased in 2004, also has plans for digital releases, remixes and historical projects.

Stax Records was housed in an old theater and featured the words “Soulsville USA” on the marquee. Label was the home of Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MGs, the Bar-Kays, Hayes, Sam and Dave, the Staple Singers, Eddie Floyd, Johnnie Taylor, William Bell and Rufus and Carla Thomas.

Sold to a church in 1980, the studio was torn down in 1988. A Stax museum was built in 2003.
