MIAMI — Bronx-bred rapper Fat Joe and performer-producer Lil Jon, the so-called “King of Crunk,” have been tapped by MTV to host the debut “Pimp My Ride Intl.”
Scheduled to air on MTV Europe this fall, show follows the transformation of ordinary motor vehicles into mean machines with the help of All Stoff Garage, based in Alkmaar, Holland.
Currently filming “pre-pimp” segments, series is open to any European and will showcase classic Eastern European rides as well as Western models.
MTV Europe aired the original series but there have been local adaptations.
The U.K. produced its own version, which was picked up by sister nets in Scandinavia, Holland and Portugal.
MTV Italy cast its net a bit wider than cars with “Pimp My Anything” while MTV Germany limited itself to two wheels with “Pimp My Bicycle.”
For the pan-European edition, MTV Europe said it chose American hosts because the show and concept are so closely tied to American hip-hop culture.
It may well help Fat Joe — born Joseph Cartagena of Cuban and Puerto Rican parents — raise his profile as he looks to diversify.
The rapper, who appeared in “Empire” and “Scary Movie 3,” has a development deal with Fox for a comedy series based on his life and is working on a script for a pilot.
He released his first record in 1993, has collaborated with Nelly, R&B singer Ashanti, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin and, despite his Latin heritage, only recently began to rap in Spanish.
In addition to his own music, Lil Jon (Jonathan Smith) has produced for Usher and Ciara.
Both Fat Joe and Lil Jon were featured as themselves on the “Bling It On” episode of “The Apprentice 3.”
