Eagles shop at Wal-Mart

SoCal band close to inking deal with discount chain

The Eagles are close to inking a deal with Wal-Mart giving the discount chain exclusivity on future releases and sponsorship tie-ins.

The deal is expected to close before Wal-Mart’s annual meeting for financial analysts and major investors, which is being held outside Arkansas for the first time. Meetings will be in New York and Teaneck, N.J., and the Eagles plan to perform Tuesday at the Nokia Theater for Wal-Mart execs and meeting attendees. The Eagles also will perform Monday at Rockefeller Center’s Rainbow Room at a party being thrown by Bob and Harvey Weinstein to honor Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott.

Currently unsigned, the Eagles have been rumored to be recording for the past several months; it’s likely they would release a new album via Wal-Mart. Seven years ago, the Southern California band created Eagles Recording Co. and at the time discussed releasing an album via the Internet on their own.

Last year, Garth Brooks inked an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart, giving it the rights to master recordings he made while signed to Capitol.

Wal-Mart’s recently announced environmental initiatives, including the use of renewable energy sources, apparently impressed Eagle Don Henley, a longtime environmental activist.

The Eagles, one of the top concert attractions of the last dozen years, have not issued a studio album of all new material since 1979’s “The Long Run.” Their catalog remains with Warner Music Group.
