Cashing in on Globes

Awards, 'Oprah' propel album sales

Video appears to be boosting the radio star as the Golden Globes pumped Johnny Cash sales and Oprah Winfrey aided Neil Diamond.

And at the top of the chart, Jamie Foxx and Mary J. Blige swapped places once again.

Foxx’s “Unpredictable” (J Records) returned to No. 1 on sales of 97,000, topping Blige’s “Breakthrough” (Geffen) by 2,400 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It is the third time Foxx’s “Unpredictable” has sat in the No. 1 slot since its Dec. 20 release.

But the impressive showing of “Walk the Line” at the Golden Globes (three major wins) resulted in more fans seeking out the Universal-Sony Johnny Cash hits compilation “Legend of.” Disc rose five slots to No. 5 off a sales spike of 27%, selling 55,000 copies in the week ended Sunday. TVT’s “Walk the Line” soundtrack saw sales rise by 4,000 copies to 23,000 and pushed the disc up nine spaces to No. 29.

Percentagewise, Diamond’s “12 Songs” was the real winner, spiking 350%. Following his “Oprah” appearance, “12 Songs” rose 97 slots to No. 22 on sales of 27,000.

Other top-50 albums to see slight sales bumps were James Blunt’s “Back to Bedlam,” Destiny’s Child’s “#1’s,” Keyshia Cole’s “Way It Is,” Death Cab for Cutie’s “Plans,” Sean Paul’s “Trinity” and T-Pain’s “Rappa Ternt Sanga.”

With no debuts in the top 50, the top-selling newcomer was Juanita Bynum’s “Piece of My Passion” (Flower), which sold 16,000 (No. 55).
