MADRID — Antonio Garcia Ferreras, an iconic figure in Spain’s liberal media, has been tapped as channel director at broadcaster La Sexta, which launched March 27.
Rumored for weeks, the appointment is the latest in a string of high-profile signings. It also reconfirms La Sexta’s left-of-center place in Spain’s political landscape.
For the past two years, Garcia Ferreras has been general director of contents and communication at Real Madrid soccer club, steering its entry into film (“Real, the Movie”) and TV (muppet show “Real Pets”), as well as the relaunch of its niche channel Real Madrid TV in July, including international English and Spanish-language satellite/cable TV channels.
Per audience research company Sofres, Real Madrid’s domestic channel is the most-watched sports channel in Spain.
