SYDNEY — Two new Australian plays will be included in Melbourne Theater Company’s 2007 season, along with starring roles for local thesps Magda Szubanski and Joel Edgerton.
Szubanski will star in Jean Giraudoux’s adaptation of Maurice Valency’s “The Madwoman of Chaillot,” while Edgerton will appear in Martin McDonagh’s “The Pillowman.”
Artistic director Simon Phillips, celebrating his 20th year with MTC, will helm both.
Premiering are “The Glass Soldier,” by Hannie Rayson, which tells the true story of a married couple who lived through two world wars and the Depression; and Ross Mueller’s “The Ghost Writer,” which introduces a supernatural element to the story of a woman commissioned to pen a tragedy.
Subscriber season also includes Australian preems of Will Eno’s “Thom Pain (based on nothing),” Roy Smiles’ “Ying Tong,” Shelagh Stephenson’s “Enlightenment” and the new Aussie production of Alan Bennett’s “The History Boys.”
