MTC casts its ‘Lady’

Mulgrew, Caulfield in 'Leading' roles

Manhattan Theater Club has announced the full cast for its upcoming Off Broadway production of Charles Busch’s new comedy, “Our Leading Lady,” opening March 20 at New York City Center.

Kate Mulgrew, Maxwell Caulfield, Kristine Nielsen and Ann Duquesnay head the ensemble, with Barbara Bryne returning to the New York stage for the first time since the original production of “Into the Woods.” Reed Birney, J.R. Horne, Amy Rutberg and Billy Whelan also star in the play about a 19th century American stage luminary preparing to go on at D.C.’s Ford’s Theater the night Abraham Lincoln was shot.

MTC a.d. Lynn Meadow will direct the production, reuniting the company and director with the playwright behind “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” which successfully transferred to Broadway in 2000.

As previously announced, Meadow, who has headed MTC since 1972, will take a year’s sabbatical beginning in August, with director Daniel Sullivan stepping in to program the company’s lineup the following season.
