Still in the planning stages, Howard Panter for ATG is aiming to produce a Noel Coward compilation show built for and around Elaine Stritch. Scheduled to open in London in December, the show will then move to Broadway.

Showbiz legend Stritch first worked with Noel Coward in 1961 when she took over the leading role during out-of-town tryouts on his musical “Sail Away.” They became firm friends, and the show gave her one of her hallmark songs, “Why Do the Wrong People Travel,” which she revived in her autobiographical hit “Elaine Stritch at Liberty.”

Coward himself would have approved of the casting. Writing of “Sail Away” in his diary, he opined: “Stritch’s performance was nothing short of miraculous.” And of another performance: “She really is an astonishingly fine actress.”
