‘Bill W. and Dr. Bob’ headed to Broadway

Play co-written by doctors Bergman and Surrey

New play “Bill W. and Dr. Bob,” about the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, receives an Off Broadway berth at New World Stages in February.

Co-written by doctors Stephen Bergman and Janet Surrey, the play had a successful preem earlier this year at Boston’s New Repertory Theater.

New Repertory is one of the backers of the Off Broadway run, which is co-produced by Bradford S. Lovette, Michael and Judith Weinberg, Milton McKenzie and Evelyn Freed.

Gotham incarnation will star the Boston cast, headed by Robert Krakovski and Patrick Husted in the title roles. Rick Lombardo reprises his duties as helmer.

Plot follows a stockbroker and a surgeon, both alcoholics, whose friendship led to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

“Bill W. and Dr. Bob” begins previews Feb. 16 for a March 5 opening.
