After playing arts patron Peggy Guggenheim, Mercedes Ruehl will slip into artist Frida Kahlo’s sandals for the world preem of Diane Shaffer’s “Viva la Vida!,” opening July 18 at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, N.Y.
Helmed by Susana Tubert, the play centers on the last 18 months in the life of the Mexican painter.
The summer theater at the east end of Long Island also will feature Crispin Whittel’s philosophical comedy “Darwin in Malibu,” staged by Danny Gerroll (Aug. 15-Sept. 3). The British play is produced in association with the Falcon Theater in Burbank, Calif. Latter will produce the U.S. preem in April under director Casey Stangl.
The four-play season opens with Ronald Harwood’s comedy “Quartet” (May 23-June 4). The Bay Street production of the four-hander stars Kaye Ballard and Paul Hecht and will be helmed by Tony winner Jack Hofsiss.
Also included in the 15th-season lineup is “The Who’s Tommy,” helmed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge (June 13-July 9).
