‘Angels’ opera has wings

Kushner epic will make North American preem in June

A chamber opera version of Tony Kushner’s theatrical epic “Angels in America” will make its North American preem in June at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Stanford Calderwood Pavilion.

Composed by Transylvanian-born Peter Eotvos, the work was commissioned and first performed in 2004 by Theatre du Chatelet in Paris; Julia Migenes starred.

The contemporary chamber opera also was performed in Hamburg, Germany, in 2005. The Paris production was filmed for PBS’ “Great Performances.”

At two hours and 25 minutes, the opera runs a little more than a third of the total running time of Kushner’s twin plays.

Sung in English with a libretto by Mari Mezei, “Angels” will be performed June 16, 17, 20 and 24.

The production, helmed by Steven Maler, VP for programming at the Wang Center for the Performing Arts, comes from the three-year-old group Opera Unlimited, a collaboration between Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Opera Boston. Gil Rose, artistic director of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and music director of Opera Boston, will be conducting.

Cast includes baritone Drew Poling as Roy Cohn, tenor Matthew DiBattista as Louis, baritone Nikolas Sean-Paul Nackley as Joe, soprano Amanda Forsythe as the Angel, Ja-Nae Duanbe as Hannah, countertenor Matthew Truss as Belize, baritone Thomas Meglioranza as Prior and Anne Harley as Harper.
