The Sydney season of John Lennon bioplay “And in the End: The Death and Life of John Lennon” has shuttered a week early and the show’s Melbourne leg has been canceled.
With Valentine Pelka in the title role, “And in the End” preemed at the Edinburgh Festival last year before being rejigged for Oz ahead of a planned Broadway season by Australian producer Frank Williams and U.S. producers the Walrus Group.
Williams declined comment Monday, but the former IMG topper is bitterly disappointed by the show’s failure. It had been due to end its four-week Sydney run on Sunday.
“A lot of friendships were destroyed,” one insider said.
Reviews were split, and auds at the 700-seat Parade Theater at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts numbered between 100 and 300 for the 12 days it ran.
Oz season was intended to be an out-of-town tryout and allow some space for the musical revue “Lennon” to run its course on Broadway.
