“Grease” is the word in Spain.
Barcelona-based mini-major Filmax is partnering with indie Notro Films and musical specialist Stromboli Entertainment to set up legit company Filmax Stage. First project is a Spanish version of “Grease.”
Entitled “Grease, el musical de tu vida” (Grease, the Musical of Your Life), the Spanish-language show will open at Barcelona’s Teatre Victoria on Oct. 3, sticking closely to the 1978 John Travolta-Olivia Newton-John movie, said show’s director Ricard Reguant.
“Filmax Stage forms part of our ambition to create a fully fledged entertainment studio at Filmax,” added prexy Carlos Fernandez. “We also hope that ‘Grease’ will inject life into Barcelona’s live entertainment scene, which has a large tradition but has flagged somewhat in recent years.”
If successful in Barcelona, Fernandez hopes the show will tour Spain and perhaps Latin America.
Like Filmax, boutique company Notro can spark synergies between musicals and its core film production-distribution activities.
Choreography will be by Coco Comin and musical direction from Manu Guix.
Casting will begin May 15.
