Pic was shot over 11 days using eight camera phones

JOHANNESBURG — A promo for South African helmer Aryan Kaganof’s “SMS Sugar Man,” the world’s first feature shot entirely on mobile phone cameras, will premiere at the African and Latin American Cinema Festival in Milan on March 22.

Promo will be available on Smssugarman.com.

The film was shot for $165,000 over 11 days using eight camera phones. It tells the story of a pimp and two high-class prostitutes cruising Johannesburg on Christmas Eve.

Fans will be able to see the film on their cell phones in 30 three-minute episodes, on the Internet as well as via traditional theatrical, TV and DVD screenings.

Executive producers Joel Phiri and Jeremy Nathan, of the DV8 independent film production project, said they were delighted with the interest the film had already generated.

“The release of the promo is in keeping with our innovative distribution approach,” they said. “We want to create a global synthetic community way before the film is released in all its various versions.”
